From Local Talent to Global Stage: An Alumni Story
Hi, my name is Fred Lassiter, also known as DJ 9ine. I'm a proud alumni of TheGifted Arts program, which I joined in sixth grade. My sister was already part of the program, and with my early passion for music and the arts, it felt like a natural fit when the opportunity arose for me to become involved.
I first realized I wanted to become a DJ when I was in eighth grade. While I had always been involved in music—playing the drums at church and singing in the choir—I began to explore new interests as I grew older. DJing quickly became one of those interests. TheGifted Arts program, and Mr. Morgan in particular, gave me my first opportunity to learn the craft. They even entrusted me with my first DJ gig, providing the soundtrack for a Gifted Arts fashion show.
TheGifted Arts program played a pivotal role in shaping me both as an artist and as an individual. It pushed me to think creatively without limits and to strive for excellence. We were held to high standards, and though things weren’t always easy, we were reminded that with hard work, we would eventually succeed. This mindset has stayed with me throughout my life, boosting my confidence in both my performances and my everyday endeavors.
If you're a young person considering joining the program, I’d say—just do it. Whether you're interested in music, arts, or entertainment, TheGifted Arts program is an incredible foundation for long-term success. It equips you with the skills and mindset to pursue your dreams.
Looking ahead, I hope TheGifted Arts program continues to grow and impact even more young people each year. With more resources and support, we can reach more kids in our community and eventually become a household name in youth arts programs across North Carolina.
Without TheGifted Arts program, I wouldn't be the DJ I am today. My passion and dreams were ignited in a middle school auditorium, and the foundation they built for me has led to a career where, 14 years later, I’m traveling the world doing what I love. I started performing for crowds of 15 people, and now I play for audiences of 15,000—all with the confidence that TheGifted Arts helped instill in me.
